When you begin your life in Tanki Online you are assigned the rank of recruit with 0 XP points to your credit, but you can swiftly rise through the ranks quite easily in the early stages. XP (Experience Points) are awarded for each kill of an enemy tank, and even your contribution to the killing of an enemy tank. So even if you do not destroy an enemy tank on your own, any direct hits on a destroyed tank are awarded to you. XP points are also awarded for the capture of flags and control points. XP points will vary according to your contribution toward the destruction of an enemy tank, and in the case of control points and flag, the number of players on the opposing team.
With more experience, new tank hull and turrets are made available for purchase in your garage. Access to more maps is also a key feature of the XP system, which helps to keep the game 'fresh' as you make progress through the rank structure. Each time you advance in rank you are awarded a certain amount of crystals, a value which increases as you go through the ranks. For example when you are promoted from Recruit to Private, you are awarded with 10 crystals but as you head through the higher ranks of Second Lieutenant and above, the reward is in the thousands. Realistically it is all relative because when you reach the higher ranks those crystals are soon used up in micro upgrades which do not come cheap when they are added to an M1 hull or turret.
